Processing high-hard thermal spray coating super-hard abrasive belt is the best choice
The 2013 International Thermal Spray Exhibition (ITSC) took place at the Busan Exhibition & Conference Center in South Korea from May 13th to 15th. As one of the most significant annual international events for thermal spray technology, ITSC rotates among Asia, Europe, and North America every three years. Organized by the American Society for Metals (ASM), this event brings together the world’s leading suppliers of thermal spray equipment, materials, and accessories. It serves as a key platform for engineers, researchers, manufacturers, and users to exchange ideas and explore new opportunities in the field.
Despite its professional nature, the 2013 event saw limited participation due to geopolitical tensions between South Korea and North Korea. Only 59 companies attended, with just five being domestic exhibitors. This small but focused gathering allowed for meaningful interactions and deep discussions on the latest advancements in thermal spraying.
Thermal spraying is a vital surface engineering technique that involves heating various materials—such as metals, ceramics, and composites—to a molten or semi-molten state using different heat sources. These materials are then atomized by a high-speed gas stream and deposited onto a prepared surface, forming a coating that adheres strongly to the substrate. The process can be used to create coatings with special properties like wear resistance, corrosion protection, heat resistance, and insulation. Its flexibility, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness make it widely used across industries such as aerospace, machinery, chemical, and construction.
High-hardness thermal spray coatings typically have a hardness above 1000 HV0.2 and a thickness ranging from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. Due to their brittleness and high hardness, surface grinding is critical. Traditional methods like diamond grinding wheels consume a lot of power, generate excessive heat, and cause workpiece burning. They also require frequent dressing and replacement, making them inefficient.
On the other hand, ordinary abrasive belts lack sufficient hardness, resulting in low grinding efficiency. In contrast, diamond abrasive belts offer superior performance for thermal spray coating treatment. They avoid the drawbacks of diamond grinding wheels while significantly improving the life and efficiency of traditional abrasive belts. Diamond abrasive belts not only enhance production efficiency but also improve the quality of the finished surface. They achieve excellent surface integrity, reducing residual stresses and eliminating micro-cracks or structural changes. The surface roughness achieved can reach Ra0.01, effectively enabling mirror-like finishes. Testing has shown that increasing the belt speed from 35 m/s to 100 m/s reduces surface roughness from Ra2.0 μm to Ra1.5 μm, an improvement that conventional tools cannot match.
Diamond abrasive belts are ideal for processing hard thermal spray coatings, especially for rolls and shafts. Diamond grinding discs and wheels are more suitable for polishing flat, curved, or complex surfaces. Their performance makes them the best choice for this application.
Currently, China's thermal spray coating processing technology still lags behind advanced countries. Many Chinese factories rely on diamond grinding wheels and vibration polishing, which are inefficient. Using diamond abrasive belts requires specific belt machines, which remain a bottleneck for wider adoption. However, Zhengzhou Ruite Diamond Belt Co., Ltd. has developed both the diamond belts and compatible belt machines to meet the requirements of thermal spray coating grinding. We believe that through continuous efforts, we can contribute significantly to the growth of China’s thermal spray industry.
At the exhibition, our biggest impression was that although the event wasn’t large and had fewer attendees, it was highly professional. Exhibitors and visitors engaged in friendly conversations, creating a warm and collaborative atmosphere. It felt like attending a party rather than a typical trade show. The organizers provided top-notch services, including daily breakfast, lunch buffets, afternoon snacks, and evening dinners. Refreshments were available in abundance, and even a standard booth priced at $2,000 could enjoy these amenities. The experience was not only informative but also extremely cost-effective compared to other domestic and international exhibitions we’ve attended. It reflected both the strength of the thermal spray industry and the high level of organization of the event.
