500MW photovoltaic project worth about 3.3 billion yuan will be tendered

According to India's Mercom, the Malaysian government is likely to initiate a tender for a PV project worth about RM2 billion (RMB 3.309 billion) in January 2019.

These projects are expected to be announced at the launch of the third round of large-scale photovoltaic power plants (LSS3), which aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy generated in Malaysia.

The installed capacity of these projects is expected to reach 500MW.

According to Malaysian media reports, as of 2016, renewable energy accounts for only 2% of Malaysia's total electricity generation.

However, the Malaysian Minister of the Environment has announced that the government hopes to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 20% by 2025. To achieve the 20% goal means more large photovoltaic projects (LSS) are needed.

So far, Malaysia has implemented two rounds of LSS with a total installed capacity of 958MW. Among these projects, three projects with an installed capacity of 32.5 MW have started commercial operations. Other projects are expected to be put into operation between the end of 2018 and 2020.
