Global paint industry develops towards low pollution and energy saving
The global paint industry has gone through a dynamic and evolving journey. With the rapid economic growth in the 21st century, the demand for paints has surged, especially in Asia, where countries like China and India have played a pivotal role in driving global market expansion. Despite the challenges posed by the global financial crisis, which led to a temporary decline in production and consumption, the industry has shown resilience and adaptability.
In 2009, the Asia-Pacific region stood out as the only growing paint market globally, driven largely by the strong performance of China and India. While European and North American markets accounted for around 22–23% of the world's total paint consumption, the Asia-Pacific region emerged as one of the largest demand centers. Following the implementation of international environmental laws, developed nations have introduced strict guidelines for the paint sector, emphasizing pollution reduction, resource efficiency, and energy conservation. Companies are now focusing on low-VOC (volatile organic compound) formulations, which not only reduce environmental impact but also meet stricter regulatory standards.
Governments worldwide are tightening controls on VOC emissions, with the U.S., Japan, and the EU setting clear limits on their content in coatings. As a result, reducing VOC levels has become a central goal for the development of architectural coatings abroad. In addition, research into new pigments and advanced additives continues to thrive, pushing the industry toward more sustainable and high-performance solutions.
The industry is also moving toward greater specialization and product diversification. Large multinational corporations are dominating the market, with the top 50 paint companies accounting for nearly 45% of global sales. Meanwhile, small and medium-sized manufacturers make up the remaining 55%, but they face increasing pressure to innovate and differentiate themselves. To stay competitive, companies are investing in product serialization and customization, ensuring their offerings meet diverse customer needs.
Looking ahead, the global paint industry is trending toward low-pollution, energy-efficient, and multi-functional solutions. Innovations such as energy-saving coatings, waste paint recycling systems, and eco-friendly materials are gaining traction. For example, Japan is using carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, to produce isocyanate-free polyurethane coatings, while Germany and other European countries are exploring plant-based recycled coatings. Additionally, waterborne coatings and functional coatings—such as those with self-cleaning, self-healing, or negative ion properties—are being actively researched and developed across the globe.
