Kunming foreign academician workstation established the main attack super hard material

Abstract Since the first foreign academicians established their workstations in Yunnan Province in 2012, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology has been actively promoting and supporting local institutions to deepen technological cooperation with developed countries. In recent years, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Academician Expert Workstation Management Committee, two new foreign academicians' workstations have been officially set up, further enhancing the province's international scientific collaboration.
Following the initial establishment of foreign academicians’ workstations in Yunnan in 2012, the Provincial Science and Technology Department has continued to support local institutions in expanding their international scientific and technological cooperation. Recently, two foreign academicians’ workstations were approved by the Yunnan Provincial Academician Expert Workstation Management Committee, marking a significant step forward in the province’s efforts to strengthen global research partnerships.

One of these workstations is the Chikhut Gold Academician Workstation at Kunming University of Science and Technology. Led by Professor Victor Chikhutkin, a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the Russian National Technical University, this workstation brings expertise in geological bit research and diamond technology. Kunming University of Science and Technology, founded in 1954, has built a strong academic foundation in fields such as geology, mining, mineral processing, and non-ferrous metallurgy. The collaboration will focus on developing advanced grinding tools for local industries, integrating the academician’s cold press-melting and bonding technologies with the university’s microwave sintering and metallurgy capabilities. Together, they aim to create innovative superhard material preparation techniques. This initiative will lead to the development of a complete production system, as well as the establishment of a Sino-Russian joint laboratory and a talent training center, meeting the needs of various sectors such as new materials, optoelectronics, jewelry, and precision machinery. It will also enhance the technical standards of related industries and strengthen scientific exchanges between Yunnan and Russia, contributing to the development of the province’s materials and metallurgical disciplines.

The establishment of foreign academicians’ workstations not only enhances the mechanism of science and technology cooperation with developed countries but also promotes innovation with a global perspective. These workstations help increase the visibility and influence of Yunnan’s academician programs, attracting more top-tier scholars to join. They also serve as platforms for incubating and introducing cutting-edge scientific achievements, ultimately driving regional development and fostering long-term international collaboration.
