Kunming foreign academician workstation established the main attack super hard material
Abstract Since the first appearance of foreign academicians in the new academician workstations in Yunnan Province in 2012, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology has been actively promoting and supporting local institutions to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation with developed countries. In recent years, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Academician Expert Workstation Management Committee, two foreign academicians’ workstations have been officially established, marking a significant step forward in international scientific collaboration.
These workstations are designed to enhance the province’s openness in science and technology and foster long-term partnerships with global research communities. One of the newly established workstations is the Chikhut Gold Academician Workstation at Kunming University of Science and Technology. It is led by Professor Victor Chikhutkin, a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the Russian National Technical University. With extensive expertise in geological bit research and application, as well as experience as the chief scientist at the Southern Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he brings valuable knowledge and innovation to the project.
Kunming University of Science and Technology, founded in 1954, has built a distinctive and comprehensive academic system, particularly in fields such as geology, mining, mineral processing, and non-ferrous metallurgy. The collaboration between the university and Professor Chikhutkin will focus on the development of high-end grinding tools tailored to local needs. By integrating the academician team’s cold press-melting forming and bonding technologies with the university’s advanced microwave sintering and microwave metallurgy techniques, the project aims to create cutting-edge methods for superhard material production.
Through this workstation, a full set of superhard material preparation technology will be developed, along with the establishment of a Sino-Russian joint laboratory for superhard materials and a talent training base. These initiatives will support various industries, including new materials, optoelectronics, jewelry manufacturing, and precision machinery. Ultimately, the project will elevate the technical standards of related sectors, strengthen scientific exchanges between Yunnan and Russia, and contribute to the development of Kunming’s materials and metallurgical disciplines.
The establishment of foreign academicians’ workstations not only enhances the mechanism of international scientific cooperation but also promotes innovation with a global perspective. It helps increase the visibility and influence of Yunnan’s academician workstations, attracting more international experts to participate. This initiative supports the incubation and introduction of more advanced scientific and technological achievements into the region, further driving economic and industrial development.
