Rolling bearings are essential components in many mechanical systems, especially in vehicles. There are numerous types of rolling bearings, each with different sizes and applications. These bearings can suffer from damage due to collisions or improper handling, which is quite common. Since they are often installed inside machinery, it's not always easy to inspect them visually. Therefore, making a rough judgment based on symptoms and then opening the unit for inspection is usually necessary. Proper use of rolling bearings is crucial to reducing problems and extending their service life. This involves correct installation, proper lubrication, and regular maintenance. The following section discusses the application requirements of rolling bearings and common issues that may occur. **First, the correct usage of rolling bearings:** Before disassembling or assembling a bearing, it should be cleaned thoroughly. A special tool should be used to press the bearing straight and evenly, avoiding any direct impact from a hammer. If the bearing housing or seat hole is loose, the housing or bearing should be replaced rather than using methods like padding or peening the contact surface. When removing a bearing, use a suitable puller instead of chisels or hammers, as these can damage the bearing. **Second, lubrication of rolling bearings:** Common lubricants used for rolling bearings include oil and grease. When the shaft speed is below 4–5 m/s, or when oil cannot be used, grease is typically preferred. Grease provides good sealing, is less likely to leak, and is not affected by temperature changes. It also lasts longer. However, when using grease, two key points must be considered: 1. Choose the right type of grease according to the vehicle’s manual. For example, water pump bearings should not use nano-grease because of its poor water resistance. 2. Do not overfill the bearing. Usually, filling 1/2 to 2/3 of the cavity is sufficient. Excessive grease increases internal resistance and causes overheating. Special attention should be given to wheel bearings, where "empty hub greasing" is recommended—just apply a thin layer of grease. Otherwise, it may cause overheating, leakage, and even affect braking performance. When using oil, ensure the old oil is drained and the system is cleaned before adding new oil. Fill it up to the recommended level or to the oil inlet port, depending on the specific design of the vehicle. **Common faults in rolling bearings:** Typical signs of bearing failure include excessive heat and unusual noise during operation. These symptoms often indicate misalignment, lack of lubrication, or wear and tear. Regular inspections and timely maintenance can prevent such issues and prolong the bearing's lifespan.
