Timken Metallurgical Bearing Application Technology (4)

Roll neck bearings must be regularly tested and maintained

1. General steps for roll neck bearing maintenance:

1) Track the position of the bearing in the rolling mill and record it. Timken can provide customers with roll neck bearing maintenance service record card, which can be used to record bearing housing number, roll number, frame number, bearing position on the rolling mill, outer ring bearing area and rolling product tonnage and bearing working hours Number of data. The record card should be updated at any time and is convenient for maintenance personnel to check. The bearing blanks can record bearing measurement data and other test details.
2) Remove the bearing housing from the roll and remove the bearing from the bearing housing. Whether it is to remove the bearing from the bearing housing or to carry out bearing inspections, special lifting methods and tools are required. Timken can provide customers with lifting tools and special lifting methods.
3) Clean the bearings. All flaking, water, residual lubricant, and any other contaminants that cause severe wear on the bearings should be removed during cleaning of the bearings. The cleaning method and cleaning agent used to clean the bearings are determined by the size of the bearing to be cleaned or the number of bearings. Small bearings or small quantities of bearings can be kerosene, mineral oil or other commercial solvents. For large bearings or a large number of bearings, a neutral oil with a viscosity of 22 cSt (or 100 SUS at 100 °F) at 40 ° C can be used in a cleaning tank.
4) Check the bearings, including visual inspection and minor repairs. On the outer surface of the inner ring or the surface of the roller on which the roller can be removed, if a small peeling or skin crack is found, the metal is usually peeled off by a sander and the edge of the peeling surface is polished.
5) The degree of bearing wear should be checked regularly, and the bearing wear can be evaluated by measuring the bearing clearance;
6) Inspect and repair the bearing housing as needed;
7) Put the bearing back into the bearing housing;
8) Inspect and repair the roll neck as needed;
9) Mount the bearing housing with the bearing onto the roll.

2. Rolling neck bearing lubrication:

1) Recommended lubricant properties:
Type of soap base: complex lithium base, calcium sulfonate, composite aluminum base or equivalent analog;
Consistency: NLGI No.1 or No.2
Additives: Preservatives and antioxidants, extreme pressure EP additives (ASTM D2509 American Standard Test Method), according to Timken's “OK” load detection standard and good water wash resistance Base oil: Solvent-based refined mineral oil or synthetic Oil base oil viscosity: 320-460 cSt
Viscosity index: minimum 80
Flow point: maximum -10 °C
2) Recommended grease type:
a. Timken Premium Mill Grease
b. Mobil Mobilith SHC 460
c.Fina Ceran HV
3) Recommended grease usage:
The filling amount of the grease is preferably two-thirds or one-third of the space for filling the bearing and the bearing housing, and it is not excessively lubricated. It is recommended to add 1/5 of the initial amount of oil after each grinding roll. The replenishing cycle of the grease is related to the structure, speed, temperature and environment of the bearing. The user can adjust it according to the actual operating environment. In a reasonable way, the lubricating grease is always retained in the bearing;
4) When installing a new roll neck bearing, it is not necessary to wash off the anti-rust grease applied to the new bearing. Although the anti-rust grease cannot be used as a lubricant, it does not hinder the normal use of the bearing.

3. Storage and storage of roll neck bearings:

1) The inner and outer ring components of the bearing shall be wrapped with plastic, and the packaging design of the bearing shall meet the requirements of moisture and dustproof of the bearing;
2) In order to avoid the elliptical deformation of the inner and outer rings, the roll neck bearings should be placed horizontally, and the bearings should be stored in the original packaging and placed in a dry place;
3) In dusty and humid environments, the bearings are not allowed to be removed from the package and placed on the tray or on the open shelves;
4) All bearing installation tools should be clean and in good condition. The workbench assembly area should be kept clean and should not be assembled next to the weld zone and machining equipment to prevent debris and dirt from entering the bearing.

V. Conclusion

The service life of the roll neck bearing depends not only on the selection of the bearing and its performance, but also on its installation and maintenance. Proper roll neck bearing installation and maintenance not only ensures and extends the service life of the bearings and other parts of the mill, but also prevents early failure of the mill due to bearing failure. The best way to help customers keep their systems running smoothly is to equip their customers with the knowledge of bearing installation and maintenance. With deep bearing knowledge and extensive steel manufacturing experience, as well as a dedicated engineering and technical service team, Timken will continue to help customers create higher value at lower operating costs.
