EU develops more environmentally friendly flame retardant technology
Bromine is a key flame-retardant element widely used in various products such as household appliances, paints, furniture, and industrial flame retardants. However, extensive scientific research has shown that bromine poses serious risks to the environment, including contamination of water, soil, and air. It is recognized as one of the primary sources of toxic pollution, with harmful effects on hormones, genetic structures, and the nervous system. In response, the European Union has introduced regulations to phase out bromine in certain products over time.
To address this challenge, the "Relentless" project is actively researching and developing advanced flame-retardant technologies that can replace traditional brominated compounds. This initiative is fully supported by the EU’s Seventh Research and Development Framework Program (FP7) and led by scientists from the IES Institute of Technology. The project brings together experts from across Europe, making it a top priority for the ENFIRO R&D team.
The European Commission has set three main objectives for the development of bromine alternatives: first, ensuring economic viability in production and application; second, guaranteeing environmental safety and reliability; and third, promoting recyclability throughout the product lifecycle.
The innovative flame-retardant technology developed by the European Commission—based on metal, phosphorus, or nanoclay—offers significant improvements over conventional brominated flame retardants. It delivers better cost-effectiveness, enhanced fire safety, and greater environmental benefits. Studies show that it has lower toxicity, reduced flammability, and minimal smoke production compared to traditional options. Additionally, it does not contain halogens or polymers that could pose long-term risks.
Beyond its immediate impact on fire safety, this new technology holds great potential for use in fields like printed circuit boards, polymer manufacturing, and textile coatings. With its promising performance and sustainability, it represents a major step forward in creating safer, greener flame-retardant solutions for the future.
