How fire dampers work

Fire dampers, as their name implies, are essential safety devices designed to prevent the spread of smoke and flames from fire-affected areas. They are engineered to maintain both fire resistance and structural integrity for a specified duration during a fire incident. In modern buildings, fires can spread rapidly through ventilation and air conditioning systems, often leading to severe damage and loss of life. This is why it's crucial to implement effective fire and smoke control measures, with properly installed fire dampers playing a key role in limiting the spread of fire. In many building design projects, however, the selection and placement of fire dampers are not done correctly. This oversight can compromise the overall fire safety system and increase risks during emergencies. Proper installation and correct choice of fire dampers are vital to ensuring that they function effectively when needed most. The structure of a fire damper typically includes a valve body and an actuator. The valve body consists of a casing, flanges, blades, and a blade linkage mechanism. The actuator contains components such as a casing, blade adjustment mechanism, clutch, and a temperature-sensitive fusible link. The actuator operates using a mechanical system that relies on a metal fusible piece and a clutch mechanism to control the movement of the blades. When the temperature of the air or gas passing through the duct reaches the melting point of the fusible metal, the piece melts, causing the spring-loaded mechanism to disengage the clutch. This allows the torsion springs within the valve body to rotate the blades shut, closing the damper. This process occurs without the need for electricity or other external power sources, making the fire damper reliable even in the absence of power. Under normal conditions, when the temperature remains below the fusible link’s melting point, the damper stays open, allowing airflow to pass freely. However, once the temperature exceeds safe limits, the damper automatically closes, preventing the spread of fire and smoke through the ductwork. This automatic response ensures the safety of the building and its occupants.
