Researchers at Russia’s Plekhanov University of Economics have created biodegradable compounds based on polyethylene and various plant fillers. New technologies help create new organic packaging materials, and the results are published in the journal Polymers and the Environment. Although most of the packaging used for labeling in Russia is said to be biodegradable, in fact, biodegradation cannot be carried out in soil or landfills. Researchers performed biodegradation experiments on biological components on the basis of polyethylene with various plant fillers, and determined the influence of filler particle size on the physical properties of the polymer and its biodegradation rate. After using industrial and agricultural waste as a filler, they combined with traditional polymers to obtain polymer composites with plant fillers.
