Application of hollow glass microbeads in the thermal insulation coating industry

Glass beads offer a minimal specific surface area and low oil absorption, which significantly reduces the need for other ingredients in coating formulations. Their smooth, vitreous surface is highly resistant to chemical corrosion and reflects light effectively. As a result, coatings containing glass beads provide excellent anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, UV resistance, anti-yellowing, and scratch-resistant properties.

The tightly packed hollow glass microspheres contain a thin layer of gas inside, giving them low thermal conductivity. This makes the coating highly effective at insulating against heat. Additionally, these hollow spheres improve the flow and leveling of the coating. The internal gas within the microspheres also helps resist temperature-related expansion and contraction, enhancing the flexibility of the coating and reducing cracks or peeling caused by thermal stress. Even when added in high quantities, the viscosity of the coating doesn’t increase significantly, allowing for reduced solvent use. This leads to lower emissions of harmful gases and a more environmentally friendly product with a better VOC rating.

Recommendations:

The typical addition rate is between 8% and 20% of the total weight. It’s best to add the hollow glass beads at the end of the mixing process. Use a low-speed, low-shear mixer to disperse them. Due to their spherical shape and lack of friction between particles, they mix easily and can be fully dispersed quickly. Slightly extending the stirring time ensures even distribution throughout the coating.

Hollow glass beads are chemically inert and non-toxic, but their extremely low density means they can easily become airborne during handling. To prevent this, we recommend a step-by-step addition method—adding half of the required amount at a time and gradually incorporating the rest. This approach minimizes dusting and ensures more complete dispersion in the final product.
