British researchers have warned that when choosing sofas, carpets and mattresses, be aware that some toxic and flame-retardant materials on household items may cause cancer, especially thyroid cancer.

The British "Daily Mail" reported that in the past 10 years, the incidence of thyroid cancer in the United Kingdom and the United States has soared. Duke University researchers say this may be related to the flame retardants used in household items. The researchers analyzed blood samples from patients with thyroid cancer and dust samples from their homes and found that they had been exposed to a large amount of chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBEDs).

In addition, the levels of tris(2-hydroxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) are also higher in these patients with thyroid cancer. Like PBEDs, it interacts with human hormones and causes cancer. These two substances have been widely used as flame retardants for furniture more than a decade ago. Although they have been banned, the risks previously caused cannot be underestimated.

The researchers pointed out that there is still a flame retardant called DecaBDE that has not been banned. This substance will enter the body with dust and dirt on the hands and food, leading to infertility. Its accumulation in the child's body is particularly serious and may cause learning problems.
