Scientists use RFID tags to survey bird movements

Recently, a group of researchers from the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom conducted research on the "social activities" of birds. However, during their research, they discovered that the method of collecting data using radio transmitters and receivers is not only time-consuming, but also very costly for researchers. So they came up with a way to use a small RFID electronic tag developed by the University of Washington Encounternet to survey the bird's activities.

It is reported that this label is less than 1 gram. Encounternet's signal will be strengthened once other birds are approaching. The research team stated that when a bird with Encounternet is attached to a specific base station, the data on the tag will be automatically transmitted to the base station. At the same time, the label's battery can be controlled remotely.

The research team said that research on the social life of birds will help them better understand birds. They chose to conduct the study on the New Caledonian Islands in the South Pacific, and the results of the study will be announced one week later.
