The largest solar power station in the Middle East is connected to the grid for power generation

On March 17, the Middle East's largest solar power project, "Solar One," was officially connected to the grid in the desert of the United Arab Emirates. Located on the outskirts of Zayed, approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi, this groundbreaking facility spans 2.5 square kilometers—equivalent to 300 football fields—and has a capacity of 100 MW. It is expected to supply electricity to around 20,000 households in the UAE. The event marked a significant milestone in the UAE’s renewable energy strategy. The opening ceremony was attended by key figures including President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Speaking at the ceremony, the UAE President emphasized that the completion of Solar One reflects the nation’s strong commitment to investing in sustainable energy solutions. He highlighted that the project represents a crucial step toward building a diversified economy and ensuring long-term energy security for the country. Amin Adnan, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, praised the project as a key step in shaping the future of green energy in the region. He noted that the UAE's leadership in renewable energy serves as an inspiring example for the Middle East and beyond. Solar One uses advanced technology, with 258,000 compound parabolic reflectors that concentrate sunlight into tubes filled with heat-transfer oil. This hot oil is then used to generate steam, which drives turbines to produce electricity. The project is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by about 175,000 tons—equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees or removing 15,000 cars from the road. The project was developed through a joint effort between Masdar Energy (UAE), TotalEnergies (France), and Abengoa Solar (Spain). The UAE holds 60% ownership, while France and Spain each hold 20%. With its operation, the Masdar Group will now account for 68% of renewable energy production in the Gulf region and 10% of global solar energy capacity.
