China successfully developed direct uranium measurement system

It was learned from the Institute of Nuclear Application Technology of East China University of Technology that the first neutron logging uranium system in China developed by Professor Tang Bin’s research team has successfully performed well logging tests recently. The test proved that the system can directly measure uranium, and the detection limit of uranium content has reached 2/10000. Experts believe that this system has achieved a revolutionary breakthrough in the direct measurement of uranium technology in China.

According to reports, direct measurement of uranium content in the formation has restricted the development of China’s uranium mining industry. Dong Bin University of Science and Technology Tang Bin research team from China's uranium exploration and mining reality, which lasted more than four years of painstaking research, and finally developed a neutron uranium logging system. This system employs multi-detector technology that eliminates the effects of water layers, well pipes, cement rings, etc. on the measurement results and allows direct measurement of uranium deposits. Compared with conventional gamma logging technology, this system does not need to measure the content of radium and then calculate the uranium content. This avoids the chemical analysis required to obtain the balance between uranium and radium and realizes the rapid on-site measurement of uranium.

Tang Bin further explained that the conventional gamma-ray logging tool must meet two preconditions for measuring the accuracy of uranium: first, the ore-forming mineralization time should be more than 2.5 million years; second, the ore deposit itself should not be damaged. However, there are few ore deposits satisfying these two conditions, especially sandstone uranium deposits. In the process of in-situ leaching of uranium, using the difference in the chemical properties of uranium and radium and taking away uranium, leaving radium, the balance of uranium and radium is severely damaged, and the residual uranium content in the mining area cannot be objectively evaluated. At present, only Russia and the United States abroad have mastered direct uranium measurement technology.

"It can be expected that in the near future, China's independent research and development of the world's leading level of neutron logging uranium testing technology will be applied to the uranium exploration and mining areas."
