Cotton seedling management is critical
Whether cotton seedlings can be fully established after sowing is crucial for achieving high yields. To better understand this process, the reporter spoke with Xu Fengzhi, an expert from the Xinqiu Cotton Research Institute under Xinqiu Seed Industry.
Xu explained that after the cotton plants emerge, it's essential to inspect the field promptly. If gaps are found, seedlings should be replaced as soon as possible. The method of replanting depends on the age of the existing seedlings. Typically, seedlings are transplanted before they develop true leaves, while soil is removed after the true leaves appear.
Once the seedlings are planted, the field often shows scattered growth. After transplanting, it's important to immediately remove weak or small seedlings and keep only 2–3 strong ones per hole. This should be done once the seedlings have developed at least one true leaf.
For fields where seeds were sown first, seedlings should be placed properly after emergence. The best time to do this is when the seedlings are green rather than yellow, ideally in the late afternoon on a sunny, windless day.
Early cultivation is also important, especially in wet spring seasons. During the seedling stage, frequent tilling isn't necessary. Instead, timely cultivation helps keep the soil around the plants loose and healthy. For light-salt soils exposed to open fields, more attention should be given to inter-row tilling and increasing the frequency of cultivation.
If diseases occur during the seedling stage, root baking may be required to prevent further damage.
In fields where sufficient base fertilizer has been applied, additional seedling fertilizer may not be needed. However, if the base fertilizer was insufficient or the field lacks proper nutrients, applying seedling fertilizer early is recommended—about 5 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per mu, or a mix of chemical and organic fertilizers like cake manure.
To avoid lowering the ground temperature, watering is generally avoided before sowing. But if the field is dry and the seedling stage remains dry, shallow ditches should be filled with water carefully, using small amounts. Tilling should follow immediately after watering.
In mulched fields, topdressing and watering are usually not done during the topdressing stage, provided the base fertilizer has been properly applied and the stalks have been well-established.
