Electrical is electrical — but can it really be understood as the weather in the sky? I've worked in the electrical industry for many years, and yet the definition of "electrical" still feels a bit vague. In my beginner's class discussions on electrical definitions, we often refer to Electrical/Electrical Engineering (EE), which covers areas like microelectronics, photonics, and microcomputer applications. But I feel that this definition might not fully capture what people usually think of when they say "electric." However, one thing everyone agrees on is that electrical appliances are tangible objects, while "electrical" itself is more of an abstract classification concept. In fact, electrical appliances are a subset of electrical devices. The term "electrical" has its roots in the early days of Western industry, when power was primarily driven by steam turbines. Later, with the advent of electricity, the word "electric" began to refer to industrial power sources. Today, steam turbines are no longer common, so "electric" is used more broadly. It’s just a term that stuck around, and there’s nothing too complicated about it. In industrial contexts, the gas used in electrical systems is often referred to as "compressed air." When it comes to automation, there are three main types of equipment that require movement: electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic. Electric and pneumatic systems are the most commonly used, and they’re often combined to achieve efficient automation. That’s why we call it "electrical automation." Interestingly, the term "electricity" originated in Japan. Japanese translators adopted the term from Western languages, interpreting it as the "state of electricity." So, electricity is essentially the study of how electricity behaves and is used. It’s a field that combines both theory and practical application, making it a crucial part of modern technology and daily life.
