Big copper era cast copper crafts maintenance instructions
**Maintenance Guide for Cast Copper Handicrafts**
After using cast copper handicrafts for a while, they may start to lose their original luster due to exposure to air and humidity. Over time, the protective layer on the surface can oxidize, causing the copper to darken and lose its vibrant color. In severe cases, a green patina (commonly known as "copper green") may appear, and white spots or crystalline marks might form in areas where moisture has escaped through sand holes. These are typical issues that occur with cast copper products. Below are some effective maintenance tips to restore your product’s original appearance.
**Regular Inspection and Care**
Cast copper items sold in stores are often stored in warehouses or displayed on shelves. Due to environmental factors like weather, ventilation, or other unpredictable conditions, the protective coating on the surface may wear off after 15 to 30 days. At this point, it is recommended to open the packaging every 15 days and use the metal polish wipes provided by the store. Follow these steps:
1. Wipe the surface of the copper item with a clean, soft cotton cloth, then apply the metal care wipe directly onto the surface and gently rub it in.
2. Start wiping from the more raised areas of the product and gradually move to the recessed parts. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, so as not to damage the natural finish.
3. If the product has a brushed texture, make sure to wipe along the grain direction to avoid damaging the pattern and preserving the aesthetic appeal.
4. For areas with oxidation (usually found in low or hard-to-reach places), adjust the amount of metal care agent based on the severity of the oxidation and wipe until the copper green disappears. For crystalline white powder caused by moisture escaping through sand holes, gently remove it with a wooden tool or soft material before applying the metal care agent.
**Daily Maintenance**
In addition to natural oxidation, cast copper handicrafts displayed in stores may be affected by customer handling. Sweat from hands can cause oxidation on the surface, leading to uneven coloration—where frequently touched areas become brighter while surrounding areas appear duller. This can reduce the overall visual appeal of the product. To maintain its beauty, it is recommended to perform daily cleaning every 3 to 5 days. Here’s how:
1. Use warm water mixed with a mild detergent to gently wipe the surface, then dry it with a soft cloth. This helps remove dust and oxidation residue without damaging the protective layer. A small amount of metal care agent can then be applied for extra protection.
2. If the product comes into contact with water or other corrosive liquids, dry it immediately with a clean cloth, then wipe it with a small amount of metal care agent.
3. Keep the display area dry and well-ventilated, and perform regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of the product.
**Note**: The above maintenance instructions are specifically designed for cast copper products made from materials such as 62 brass, white copper, and pure copper. They may not be suitable for other types of metal products.
