For over a decade, I've been collecting classical furniture, and one of the most profound realizations is that these pieces are like people—they have their own "health" and vitality. With proper care and attention, they can endure the test of time and continue to shine in beauty and craftsmanship.

As many know, traditional Chinese classical furniture is joined using mortise and tenon joints instead of nails. This means the wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Therefore, where you place your classical furniture is crucial. It should be kept away from direct sunlight and in an environment with moderate humidity. Excessive moisture or dryness can damage the wood, leading to cracks, warping, or even structural issues. Redwood, for example, is less stable than rosewood or huanghuali, and it's more sensitive to environmental fluctuations. Ideally, the room temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 30°C, with humidity levels between 40% and 50% for optimal preservation.

Some might say that classical furniture is “easily scratched.” However, it’s important to note that wet cloths are actually one of the biggest threats. The water mixed with dust forms a gritty substance that can easily scratch the surface. To clean dust from classical furniture, use a soft, fine brush to gently remove debris, followed by a dry cloth made of cotton or linen. You can also use a vacuum cleaner for hard-to-reach areas, such as carved details or hollow parts. If there are stains, a small amount of water-based or oil-based detergent can be used. After cleaning, it’s advisable to apply wax to protect the surface. Avoid waxing too frequently—once every one or two weeks is sufficient. When applying wax, follow a methodical approach: start from small areas and gradually move to larger ones, working from light to deep layers for even coverage.

When collecting classical furniture, scratches and minor damages are inevitable. If dents occur, gently wipe the affected area with a damp cloth. Let it sit for a while to see if the damage swells slightly due to moisture absorption. If no change occurs, place a damp cloth on the area and use a low-heat iron to help expand the dent. Once softened, carefully smooth it with fine sandpaper. For scratches, applying a thin layer of cod liver oil and letting it sit for a day or two before wiping can help restore the surface.

Most importantly, when collecting and maintaining classical furniture, treat it as a living entity rather than just an object. Only then will it truly reveal its unique “spirit” and character, making it more than just a piece of furniture—it becomes a part of history, culture, and personal legacy.
