For over a decade, I've been collecting classical furniture, and one of the most profound realizations is that these pieces are like people—they have their own "life" and "health." With proper care and attention, they can endure the passage of time and remain beautiful for generations. As many know, traditional Chinese classical furniture is assembled using mortise and tenon joints rather than nails. This means that the wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Therefore, the placement of such furniture is crucial. It should be kept away from direct sunlight but also in an environment with moderate humidity. If exposed to extreme conditions, the wood may crack, warp, or become brittle. Redwood, in particular, is more sensitive than other types like rosewood or huanghuali, and it reacts strongly to climate fluctuations. Ideally, the room temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 30°C, with humidity levels between 40% and 50%. Some might say that classical furniture is "easily scratched," but it's important to note that wet cloths are actually its worst enemy. The combination of water and dust in a damp cloth can create abrasive particles that scratch the surface. To clean dust off classical furniture, use a soft, fine brush to gently remove it, then wipe it with a dry cotton or linen cloth. For hard-to-reach areas, a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment can be used. If there are stains, a small amount of water-based or oil-based detergent can be applied carefully. After cleaning, it's advisable to apply wax to protect the surface—otherwise, dust can lead to unsightly spots or scratches. Regular waxing, once or twice a week, is recommended. When applying wax, follow the principle of starting from small areas and gradually moving to larger ones, ensuring even coverage and deep penetration. When collecting classical furniture, it's inevitable to face dents, scratches, or minor damage. If a dent appears, gently wipe the area with a damp cloth and let it sit for a while. Observe if the damage expands slightly due to moisture absorption. If not, place a damp cloth on the area and use a low-temperature iron to gently heat and expand the recessed part. Then smooth it with fine sandpaper. For scratches, apply a thin layer of cod liver oil and let it sit for a day or two before wiping it off. These methods can help restore the piece’s original beauty. Most importantly, when collecting and maintaining classical furniture, treat it as a living entity. Only by doing so can you truly appreciate its unique "spirit" and preserve its value for years to come.
