Calla lily, also known as the "sage flower," belongs to the genus *Zantedeschia*, a perennial evergreen herb. It thrives in warm, moist, and partially shaded environments but is not tolerant of cold or drought. The ideal growing temperature ranges between 15°C and 25°C, with winter temperatures needing to stay above 10°C. This beautiful plant is popular among flower lovers and can be grown in pots. Its flowers and leaves are often used as cut flowers, while its roots retain characteristics of aquatic plants, making it suitable for indoor hydroponic cultivation under clean conditions. Hydroponic calla lilies are typically grown in shallow water, which makes the process simple and efficient. When selecting varieties for hydroponics, it's best to choose compact, short-stemmed types such as white-handled callas, saffron callas, and silver-flowered callas. These varieties are well-suited for water culture and tend to produce vibrant blooms. For the nutrient solution, you can mix the following ingredients: 800g calcium nitrate, 210g potassium dihydrogen phosphate, 250g magnesium sulfate, 500g potassium nitrate, 30g ammonium nitrate, 10g iron EDTA, 2g manganese sulfate, 1g zinc sulfate, 1.3g boric acid, 0.15g copper sulfate, and 0.1g ammonium molybdate. During the early growth stage, the nutrient concentration should be around 1.2ms/cm, and it can be increased to 1.5ms/cm during mid to late growth. The pH of the solution should remain between 5.6 and 6.5 throughout the growing cycle. The frequency of feeding depends on weather conditions and plant size—typically 2–3 times a day to keep the substrate moist and maintain a thin layer of water at the bottom of the container. Managing hydroponic calla lilies is straightforward. Regular maintenance involves removing yellow or outer leaves to prevent overcrowding, which can hinder light exposure and air circulation. This practice also helps the flower stems grow more freely. Common pests include bacterial soft rot, aphids, and red spider mites. Bacterial soft rot affects leaves, petioles, and tubers, often originating from infected tubers. Early control can be done using a 500-fold dilution of Bordeaux mixture. Hydroponic cultivation of calla lilies requires strict cleanliness. Since this method is essentially anoxic, any organic contamination can lead to rapid oxygen depletion. Microorganisms break down pollutants, consuming dissolved oxygen and causing the water to become anaerobic. This can result in harmful gases like hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, leading to unpleasant odors. Therefore, maintaining a clean and inorganic nutrient solution is crucial. Ensuring adequate dissolved oxygen levels in the liquid is key to successful hydroponic calla lily growth.
