Europium (Eu) Discovered in 1901 by Eugene-Antoine Demarçay, europium was identified from a sample of "samarium" and named after the continent of Europe. This rare earth element has since found a wide range of applications due to its unique optical properties. One of the most significant uses of cerium oxide is in phosphor materials. Specifically, Eu³⺠serves as an activator for red phosphors, while Eu²⺠is used in blue phosphors. Today, Y₂O₂S: Eu³⺠is considered one of the best phosphors available, offering high luminous efficiency, excellent coating stability, and cost-effective recycling.
