1. Keep the floor dry and clean
Maintaining a clean and dry floor is essential for preserving its appearance and longevity. Avoid using wet mops or alkaline or soapy water, as these can dull the paint finish and damage the protective film. For light dirt or dust, use a dry mop or a slightly damp mop that has been wrung out thoroughly. It's recommended to wax your painted floor every one to two months. Before applying wax, make sure to wipe away any moisture or smudges to ensure an even finish.
2. Prevent water leakage on the floor
If water leaks occur due to heating systems or other sources, it’s important to clean the area immediately. Never expose the floor to direct sunlight or use an electric oven to dry it, as this can cause the floor to dry too quickly, leading to cracks or warping.
3. Avoid placing hot objects directly on the floor
Never leave hot pots, rice cookers, or other heat sources directly on the painted surface, as they can scald the paint and cause damage over time. Also, avoid covering the floor with plastic sheets or newspapers for extended periods, as this may lead to stickiness and loss of luster. If you must place something on the floor, use a protective mat or cloth to prevent direct contact.
4. Remove stains promptly
If the floor gets stained, act quickly to remove the stain before it sets in. For oil-based stains, use a clean rag, warm water, or a small amount of mild detergent. You can also try a mixture of neutral soap and a little rubbing alcohol for tougher spots. If the stain is severe, you may need to gently sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper or steel wool. For stains from drinks, ink, or dyes, it’s crucial to clean them before they penetrate the wood. A soft cloth dipped in furniture wax can help lift the stain. If that doesn’t work, try using steel wool followed by a coat of wax. For cigarette burns, apply furniture wax with a soft cloth to restore the shine. Ink stains should be wiped off immediately with a wax-dipped cloth, and if needed, follow up with steel wool and wax for stubborn marks.
5. Protect the floor from direct sunlight
After installing a painted floor, try to minimize direct exposure to sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can cause the paint to crack or fade prematurely. Place furniture on rubber pads or soft materials to prevent scratches on the painted surface.
6. Repair or replace damaged sections promptly
If you notice warped or lifted planks, remove the damaged section, clean the area thoroughly, reapply adhesive, and press it back into place. For minor paint damage or whitening, you can sand the area with 400-grit sandpaper, clean it, and then apply a matching paint color. Once dry, apply a second coat. After 24 hours, lightly sand again with 400-grit paper and polish the area with wax for a smooth, even finish.
