After the motorcycle engine has been used for a while, it's important to perform regular maintenance to ensure its performance and longevity. One of the key components that require attention is the motorcycle bearing. Proper protection and care can help keep your motorcycle looking new and running smoothly.
First, check the crankshaft for any signs of misalignment. The crankshaft is supported by the V-ring, and its alignment can be measured using a dial gauge. The allowable limit for crankshaft runout is 0.05 mm. If this limit is exceeded, it may cause abnormal engine vibrations, which can significantly reduce the lifespan of the engine and decrease its operating time. In such cases, the affected part should be repaired or replaced immediately.
Next, inspect the motorcycle bearings. Start by removing the front bearing using a solvent to clean it thoroughly. Then, lubricate it with oil and check if the inner seat moves smoothly. If there is resistance or uneven movement, it could indicate wear or damage. Pay close attention to the ball track and steel balls. If you notice severe pitting, peeling, or cracks, the bearing must be replaced. Even if the bearing appears to move normally, if you hear a loud "clattering" noise, it might signal excessive wear. To test this, hold the inner and outer rings tightly and push them forward and backward. If there's noticeable play, the bearing should be replaced.
Additionally, examine the oil seal of the bearing. If the seal shows signs of wear, cracking, or hardening, it may lead to leaks of fuel-air mixture or oil. Such damage should be addressed immediately by replacing the oil seal.
Another important component is the big-end bearing of the connecting rod. When checking this, remove the crankshaft from the connecting rod and ensure that the rotation in the big end is smooth. Secure one side of the crankshaft and pull the connecting rod to see if there is any unusual sound coming from the big end. The wear on the big end of the connecting rod can be estimated by observing the movement of the small end. If the wear exceeds 3.0 mm, the connecting rod, crank pin, and bearing should all be inspected and possibly replaced.
