Recently, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission organized a conference to promote university participation in industry fairs. During the event, two innovative technologies caught the attention of attendees: an elderly care system capable of detecting and reporting abnormal conditions in seniors living alone, and a solar-powered smart trash can that automatically sorts waste. These advancements are part of a growing trend in using technology to improve daily life and safety. The system can also locate and track lost elderly individuals A groundbreaking system called "Active Sensing System Based on Motion Sensing Analysis" was developed by Professor Liu Xiang from Shanghai University of Engineering Technology. Despite its complex name, the core of the system is a compact motion-sensing device resembling a USB drive. Family members can download a dedicated app and connect it via Bluetooth to the device. If the elderly person falls, faints, or experiences an emergency, the system instantly detects the abnormal activity and sends an alert to a pre-designated contact. Additionally, if someone suspicious enters the elderly person's home, the system uses real-time motion detection and facial recognition to identify potential threats. If unusual behavior is detected, the system triggers an alarm and notifies the family. It can also track the elderly person’s movement patterns and combine this with video footage to help locate them quickly—especially useful for those with dementia who may wander off. This system is currently being tested in several senior communities in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, as well as in Nagoya, Japan. It aims to provide remote monitoring and ensure the safety of elderly people living alone. Solar-Powered Smart Trash Cans In many cities, including Shencheng, garbage sorting bins are common, but public awareness and proper usage remain low, leading to inefficiencies in waste management. A team led by Senior Engineer Zhao Zhenfeng from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai University of Engineering Science has developed an environmentally friendly automatic sorting trash can designed to address this issue. As soon as users throw waste into the bin, the internal sorting mechanism activates, separating different types of waste such as cans, toothpaste pouches, light bulbs, and batteries. This makes it easier for sanitation workers to collect and process the waste efficiently. Zhang Chunyan, the project instructor, explained that existing automatic sorting bins on the market are often too complex and expensive, limiting their use to large waste processing plants. Their design, however, is more cost-effective and suitable for public spaces like parks and residential areas. The team optimized the structure and control systems, using an aluminum frame to make the bin more durable. All electronic components are integrated onto a single PCB board, reducing costs and improving efficiency. Additionally, the bin is powered by solar panels, making it energy-efficient and eco-friendly. The product has already applied for a patent, and the research team is in discussions with a company to pilot the technology in public areas such as city parks and shopping malls. (Reporter: Dong Chuanfeng) Deadend hardware is a type of pole line hardware that is used to secure the end of a transmission or distribution line to a pole or tower. It is designed to withstand the tension and weight of the line and keep it securely in place. Deadend hardware typically consists of a variety of components, including Oval Eye Nuts, Thimble Eyelets , Anchor Shackle, Guy clamps, bolts, nuts, washers, and insulators. These components work together to create a strong and durable connection between the line and the pole.
