This system can also locate and help find lost elderly individuals The "Active Sensing System Based on Motion Sensing Analysis," developed by Professor Liu Xiang from Shanghai University of Engineering Technology, is designed to monitor the well-being of elderly people who live alone. Although its name sounds technical, the system essentially uses a small motion-sensing device, similar to a USB drive. Family members can download a dedicated app and connect it via Bluetooth. If the elderly person falls, faints, or experiences an emergency, the system immediately alerts the designated contact person through the app. Professor Liu explained that if someone enters the elderly person's room in an unusual manner, the system will use real-time motion detection and facial recognition to identify the intruder. Once a suspicious activity is detected, the system triggers an alarm and notifies the family. Additionally, the system combines walking trajectory tracking with video analysis to quickly locate missing elderly individuals, helping those with dementia return home safely. The system is currently being tested in some elderly communities in Taizhou, Jiangsu, as well as in a community in Nagoya, Tokyo. It is also being considered for use in regular households to support remote care for seniors living alone. Solar-Powered Smart Trash Cans In cities like Shencheng, there are many garbage bins designed for sorting, but public awareness and knowledge about proper waste classification remain low, leading to inefficiency. A team led by Senior Engineer Zhao Zhenfeng from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai University of Engineering Science has developed an "Environmentally Friendly Automatic Sorting Trash Can" to address this issue. The bin automatically sorts different types of waste—such as cans, toothpaste bags, light bulbs, and batteries—making it easier for sanitation workers to collect recyclables. Zhang Chunyan, the project’s instructor, told reporters that most automatic sorting bins on the market are complex and expensive, limiting their use to large waste processing plants. "Our design is more compact and cost-effective, making it suitable for use in public spaces like parks and residential communities," he said. To reduce costs, the team optimized the structure and control systems, using an aluminum frame to make the bin more durable. All control components are integrated onto a single PCB board, and the control module is housed in a compact circuit box. Additionally, the bin is powered by solar panels, further enhancing its sustainability. The product has already applied for a patent, and the research team is in talks with a company to pilot the technology in public places such as city parks and shopping malls.
